At Whanganui Budget Advisory Service, we provide free, confidential, non-judgemental budgeting advice to individuals and families to help them resolve financial problems and develop their own budgeting skills.
Our Financial Mentors can guide and support you through tough financial circumstances, liaise with creditors on your behalf and connect you with other organisations that can help.  We offer a range of FREE services as listed further below.


Whanganui Budget Advisory Service is dedicated to the development of budgeting skills by:-

*Providing free and confidential budgeting services for families and individuals

*Ensuring advisors are trained and resourced

*Recognising and valuing the skills and efforts of staff and volunteers

*Providing budgeting education programs

*Complying with all statutory requirements

Our Free Services


Tahua Tahua

Working with an experienced Financial Mentor to identify options, choices and priorities to help you create and manage a budget for yourself and family.

We work with you to make you aware of where you are spending, prepare a budget and point you in the right direction.

We can assist you in negotiating with creditors, banks, loan companies, power companies and debt collection agencies.

Getting behind with payments can be scary and sometimes people feel harassed by angry phone calls or letters from creditors.  We can help you talk with these people to see if a new arrangement can be agreed on.

Debt Solutions

Otinga nama 

We can assist people facing crisis situations where we can assist with Kiwisaver Hardship Applications, Debt Repayment Orders, Ngã Tãngata Microfinance Loans and in some situations, may be assisted through a process of insolvency (NAP - No Asset Procedures or Bankruptcy)


MoneyMates Programme

This is a new Building Financial Capability peer-led support option:-

  • Five 2 hours sessions

  • One morning or afternoon a week

  • Small groups of up to 6

  • Led by a facilitator, but centered around the participants

  • Topics include: Some things about money, Needs and wants, Setting goals, Budgets and keeping track, Why pay off debt, Importance of saving

  • General group discussion on any other financial topics raised

  • Question and answer time

  • Call our office to book in for our next course

People in all types of circumstances and from all walks of life can find household budgeting and money management difficult.  It can often be a relief to know that there is someone who will help you.  We offer FREE confidential and non-judgemental advice by trained Financial Mentors.
